This paper discusses the didactical fruitfulness of open educational resources (OER), for teaching nowadays, bringing a reflection on the political and cultural context, in line with the necessary critical reading of information and communication technologies (ICT). It begins with an overview of the current Brazilian political context on teacher training for pedagogical use of ICT. The paper continues with a brief outline of some digital devices that, although having not been designed in an educational perspective, are available to the teacher, in the exercise of their professional practice. It continues with considerations about the OER, bringing a historical perspective, a conceptual discussion and an account of some successful initiatives. The paper concludes with the warning that, although the OER have a pedagogical power to the contemporary teacher’s practices, this professional must have a critical reading of the value of ICT in Education, which allows him/her to evaluate the limits and the possibilities of digital interfaces, as well as to see when and how to use these digital resources and, above all, to do it under a cultural approach.
