The study investigates the insertion of the evaluation of the university extension in the institutional evaluation of universities, with the main ization of the indissociability between teaching, research and the extension and social function of universities. The focus of the analysis are the 63 federal universities, not only for the relevance of these institutions in the Brazilian higher education system, but for effectively, for the majority, to develop extension actions. The qualitative and exploratory study was based on documentary research and content analysis of resolutions and/or equivalent documents that regulate university extension in these institutions, centralizing the treatment given to the evaluation of the extension. The content was systematized into four main categories: instances responsible for evaluating the extension; follow-up and evaluation procedures for the extension; participants in the extension evaluation processes; and integration of the extension assessment to the institutional evaluation of the university. Although most federal universities have instances responsible for evaluating the extension and use reports prepared by the coordinators of the actions as the main procedure for evaluating the extension, the definition of institutional evaluation criteria is still quite incipient, which limits the apprehension of the evaluation of all extension actions and their integration to institutional evaluation in most universities. It is concluded that the construction of an institutional policy for evaluating the extension in universities is still in process.
