DISTANCE EDUCATION AS A TEACHING METHOD IN FEDERAL PRISONS

In Brazil, Distance Education has a strategic value as it enables the democratization of access to education in places far from the city center area. However, this strategic value could also become available to maximum security penitentiaries since it supports educational assistance for people who have been deprived of freedom, seeing that it has already become regulated by law. Furthermore, it is relevant to consider the fact that it provides opportunity of fostering autonomy in studies, which stands as a mark of distance education, and it is adequate for that target population, in addition to the possibility of remission of part of the sentencing time in accordance to the Penal Execution Law. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the debate regarding the theme from reflections that analyze legislation and experts’ work.
