Abstract

Correctional measures, as foreseen on the Brazilian statute of children and adolescents, are applied to adolescents who have committed infractions. These rights imply challenges in order to ensure that the legal aspect of the youth follow-up process proves to be effective as social and educational measures. This paper proposes an insight on some elements that establish the practice of these two measures:  the assisted freedom program and community service, such as the correctional advisor's role  (reference person) and the  established relationship with the assisted teenager, including the proposal  and implementation of  the Individual Assistance Plan (Plano Individual de Atendimento – PIA – in Portuguese), among other elements. This is a study that seeks to ponder on the elements involved in this social practice, based on field work experiences in an open juvenile correctional program in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.  This study points out to issues that happen in a particular field of education, which has as its specific educational processes that ensure citizenship and overcoming the infraction experience. The paper also highlights the follow-up process as a way to promote a reflection based on adolescents' experiences and concerns in a dialogic way, thus making it possible to arise self-awareness about their life experience  and social participation.

Key words: social and educational measures, youth, infraction, educational practices.
