Abstract

Literacy as a discursive process proposes a political-educational challenge to the process of learning the mother language, since teaching and learning how to read and write is not a simple process. You learn a form of language, or more specifically, a form of interaction. Based on this assumption, we believe that the child is able to write stories, reports, news, advertisements, and even texts considered more complex, such as argumentative texts. According to Bakhtin (1992), we learn forms of language while we learn how to build and to understand the statements. Therefore, the school activities should be based on the complete statement, assuming that these activities aim to make sense for children. Thus, children’s argumentative texts in the literacy phase show individuals dealing with different situations in which they face controversial issues and different positions in relation to these issues, so they should take a position and justify it to the other.

Key words:  literacy; discursive genres; arguments.
