This article discusses the situation and educational rights of youths deprived of freedom in Brazil, as well as the challenges to the legitimacy of the right for education in prisons, based on two surveys conducted by the Public Policy Studies Research Area of the Postgraduate Program in Education of UNIRIO (Federal University of the State of Rio de Janeiro). The first is an analysis of demands presented in the National Youth Conference, held in Brasilia in December 2011, and the second, held in 2010, refers to the profile of the students of ProJovem Program in Prison in the States of Rio de Janeiro and Acre. Educational trajectories of youths, compared with their potential set of demands in education, clarifies the immense challenge of integrating actions and building a new look on these actors, seen as citizens. In this context, different policy settings are being established: on one hand, a new generation of programs of support; on the other, the need to respond to the demands of these youths, bringing them to the condition of interlocutors in decisions that concern them, in order to break their historical situation of invisibility.Key words: Prison Education; Youth Demands; ProJovem in Prison.
