Conversas em família sobre dinossauros em uma exposição no Museu Nacional de História Natural e Ciência, em Portugal

Dinosaurs are a classic symbol of science and natural history museums that fascinate adults and children alike. Our objective of this quantitative-qualitative study was to identify the types of conversations and interactions present in a family visit to a dinosaur exhibition. A total of five family groups (n = 17) who visited the National Museum of Natural History and Science (MUHNAC) in Lisbon (Portugal) participated in the study. The families had their visits recorded through a subjective camera and the audiovisual material was analyzed from the child's perspective in order to understand how they influence and give meaning to the family's experiences. The results provide evidence that interactions and conversations took place with children actively participating in the families' experience, often initiating conversations, directing the group's attention, and asking questions. Children also demonstrated knowledge that adults did not have when recognizing and naming species and bringing additional information about dinosaur habits and behaviors. In this way, we consider that the exhibition “Among Dinosaurs” supported the involvement of families, creating opportunities for conversations about science and connections with previous experiences that gave meaning to the family experience.
