The aim of this study was to verify whether there is evidence in the scientific literature about a possible relationship or correlation between sensory motor and motor skills and language development (acquisition of receptive and expressive repertoires) in children with ASD. These children commonly have language problems and some demonstrate flaws in the development of the motor system. The following descriptors were used to review the literature: (autism OR "Autism spectrum disorder" OR autism OR "autism spectrum disorder"); (OR language development); ("sensorimotor skills" OR "motor skills" OR "sensorimotor skills" OR "motor skills"). The following databases were selected, Pub Med (US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health); Frontiers in Neuroscience | Social and Evolutionary Neuroscience; Science Direct - Journals & Books; SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online); CAPES journals (Portal of CAPES / MEC journals). One hundred and seventy-seven studies were selected, however, only twelve studies met the inclusion criteria (relating motor issues and language of children with ASD). The selected studies point out relationships and correlations between sensory motor skills and language development; visual motor coordination and development of cognition, communication and language. However, due to the limited number of experimental evidence, authors suggest carrying out more empirical and longitudinal studies that involve the development of the motor system and language of children with ASD.
