This article, originated from a larger study on the performance of Bahian black organizations in the field of education, has the pretension of a brief reflection on the barriers that hinder realization of the Law 10.639/03 in Bahian schools. The study, with a qualitative approach, performed with militants/Bahian black teachers committed to education in a multicultural and anti-racist perspective in Bahia, revealed that there are many challenges to enforce this law, among them we highlight the deficiency in teachers’ initial and continuing training to work with the education of ethnic and race relations, as the affirmative educational policies in the country guide, and the religious fundamentalism on the part of those involved in the educational process. It also pointed out the lack of a more effective, joint and cooperative effort among responsible institutions for the educational process (for example, MEC, Secretaries of Education, Boards of Education, and schools), education professionals, social movements and society action as a whole, as well as the necessity of Brazilian black organizations, especially those which have a direct working with education, come together to conduct joint activities, in order to develop a collective project.
