This article aims to analyze knowledge production in the context of political expansion of higher education in Brazil in the period between the enactment of the Law for National Education Guidelines and Basis (Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional – LDB, 1996), and the supposed beginning of the effectiveness of the National Education Plan (Plano Nacional de Educação – PNE), set to be initiated in 2011. The research structuring process consisted of a series of team members meetings, taking the general objective and the specific objectives of the research project as its starting point. For that, as provided in the methodological procedures, we conducted a literature review. Then, from the definition of categories of research and analysis, the team collected documents and materials. The research findings are presented in this article into three parts, plus the final considerations, namely: 1) The production of scientific knowledge: the expansion and privatization of higher education, 2) The post-graduate research and knowledge production in Brazil, and 3) Key research findings. Thus, the article discusses the field of higher education (including post-graduation and research) in intersection with the scientific field in Brazil.
